Ep. 118: Rewriting Your Brain Stories with Jocelyn Brady

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

Your brain has a magical power to influence everything you think, do, feel, experience, and create. Jocelyn Brady is a certified Brain Coach (NeuroLeadership Institute), Tiny Habits® Coach, trainer, speaker, and the owner of Scribe Story Studios and she helps you master that magical power inside your brain.

In this episode of The Storytelling Lab, Jocelyn shows you how to recognize those bad habits and rewrite your brain stories so you can "create better sh*t."

One of my favorite aspects of storytelling is the neuroscience behind it.

We can, as the research shows, influence one's behavior by altering their brain chemistry when we tell a great story.

In fact, in my daydreams, I often think about how cool it would be to go back to school for neuroscience. That, coupled with my passion for marketing and storytelling would be a perfect one-two punch to serve my audience.

Not that I want to knock them out, but... well... you know what I mean.

Well a few months ago, I met someone who already mastered that combo.

Jocelyn Brady is a brain coach and storytelling expert, as well as a play scientist, speaker/trainer, and business owner.

My envy and impostor syndrome flared until she talked me off the ledge by explaining how we trash talk ourselves in what she calls our "BS" — "BS" technically stands for "Brain Stories" in this case, but I'm sure you picked up on the double entendre quickly.

Because that's just what those stories we tell ourselves are: BS.

And the way to eliminate those Brain Stories is to 1) recognize that you are indeed telling yourself a story that isn't true, and 2) make new habits that reset and rewire those Brain Stories.

Then, and only then, can you do your best work and create better shit, as she says.

Because the problem is that these Brain Stories keep us from doing the things that are in our hearts, or the things that we wish we could do.

Life is too short to not pursue those passions and we never know who might need what we have to offer.

"Imagine you're on your deathbed. What is the thing that that person is so proud of you for doing? That will get you really close to clarying your purpose or what you should be doing.”

This conversation was completely enlightening for me and I think it will be for you.

If you want to get rid of that pesky voice in your head that's holding you back, this is the episode for you!

Some of the highlights of our conversation:

  • What type of work lights her heart on fire the most

  • Your "BS" (Brain stories) and what they do to you

  • "Sacrificing yourself at the alter of practicality"

  • What she considers "trash thinking" and how you can stop

  • The story of what started her interest in the brain

  • What neuroplasticity is and why it matters

  • When and why she started her business, Scribe

  • What a certified Brain Coach is and does

  • Why coaches help us achieve success

  • How to use "Deathbed You" to inspire your work today

  • The importance of play

  • What's wrong with the current education system

  • What makes habit formation successful

As always, I hope you enjoy the episode!

Peace and Love,

Rain
