Creating a Successful Business Without Learning a Skill



Have you ever thought about leaving your job and starting your own thing?


Or do you have some internal desire driving you towards starting a business?


And if so, do you have a clear idea of what that business would be?


Yesterday I had a preliminary call with a potential coaching client and she said something that flooded me with excitement.


"I have no idea what I want to do."


Now for someone who is possibly going to be coaching her on how to build and market her business through storytelling, you'd think that would concern me. If she had no idea what she wanted to do, how could I help her??


But for me, this is exactly where I want to be with a client.


Because over the past five years, I've found the key to creating a successful business and brand just based on who someone is as a person.


The secret lies within their past, hidden inside of their unique story.


Most businesses start with an idea or product that serves as a solution to some sort of problem. Many others start because the business owner has cultivated some skill, then they start doing that for money and a service business is born.


But the model that I use can help someone with no skills (or tired of working in the field in which they're skilled) find a way to provide value for a certain group of people and make a business out of that.


So when I get a client like yesterday's call, I get excited because it's a blank canvas!


And it's a privilege to get to help them create this new world of theirs.


The model is simple:

  1. We look at their Skills and Passions to find something they're both good at and that they can do for a long time without losing interest.

  2. We look deep into their unique lived experiences and dissect the lessons learned from those experiences and how they shaped their perspective on the world or the work they do in it.

  3. We identify what group of people would benefit from those lessons.

  4. We determine through what products or services we can offer that deliver that information or those lessons.

  5. We figure out the best way to automate some or all of those offerings so the business owner can scale their business (or at least make passive income).


The internet and social media have changed everything.


Anyone can create a product now, find and build an audience, market that product, and create a business for free and in a short amount of time.


And the best part is, they can do without spending years cultivating some skill that they feel comfortable charging for.


They don't have to do anything special but just be themselves!


The problem is most people have no idea what's so special about them.


But it's there. Deep inside their story.


And I love to help them find it.
