I was scared, but I had

a story to tell...

In 2012, I set out with a camera and a backpack to travel the world and tell the story of an underground fitness movement that was getting young people off the streets, out of gangs, and off of drugs, as it rose in popularity and became a sport.

No one had heard of me and no one had heard of the sport, so I had no support. I had no crew, cheap equipment, and no budget. But I traveled to over 15 countries building relationships with the community, and focused on finding the true heart of their story. 

After five years, we found our ideal audience and won "Best of the Fest" at the Hip Hop Film Festival in New York City and received global distribution through Red Bull Media.

Now, I take what I learned the hard way through 15 years of making documentaries and use it to help business creatives and marketers leverage the power of storytelling to maximize the impact on their audiences and inspire them to take action, without spending a lot of time or money.

Making Raise Up: The World is Our Gym completely changed my life and the way I look at documentary filmmaking. I started with an idea and a dream, spent the last $1000 in my checking account on a plane ticket to Riga, Latvia, and launched a crowdfunding campaign to travel around the world capturing the stories of calisthenics.

Years later, I'm still in awe when someone sends me a direct message with a picture of them watching it on a plane thanks to my distribution deal with RedBull TV.

In anything I write, I try to help people understand two things: effective communication and deeper connections. I do that by sharing personal stories on my quest to live and work within these values.

My stories, essays, and articles have been seen in publications like Huffington Post, Breaking Muscle, and in over 100 articles in my weekly column at Chapelboro.com.

When you tell someone a story, it creates empathy, understanding, and relatability. People inevitably compare the events in the story to the events going on in their lives. This makes them feel not so alone. And during a time like this, that is imperative.

I could have been plagued forever by the loss of my first big client and the potential awards tied to our work, but instead, I used that perceived failure as a way to launch myself into a new path. That lead to my current client, and my current client is giving me the opportunity to create change.

I remembered a quote often attributed to the late great Dr. Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I’m still feeling the effect of our brief meeting over a decade later.

When we are connected by our screens, I think we desperately need to take advantage of the opportunity technology gives us to effect positive change in the world — and we can do that by sharing our stories of struggle and success.
